The first wristwatch (or arm watch) was created in 1571. At that time, wristwatches were designed for women only (men had a pocket watch). The first lady to wear a wristwatch was Elizabeth I.

Once Cartier saw his friend struggle to keep hands on the controls of the plane and to measure time with his pocket watch simultaneously, the idea to create the “aviator” wristwatch came to his mind.
