Kenwood kMix 0W20011139

Going Retro

The Kenwood kMix 0W20011139 has no chill. From its retro style blasting from the blast (there's something about kitchen appliances from the 60s that makes them look much more interesting than the sleek but otherwise bland units we have today) to the model's functionality, ergonomics, and performance, there's almost no room for complaints here.

That said, ditching the modern look and sticking with its retro-inspired profile, the machine has also gained some weight. Where most stand mixers nowadays usually stop at ~7 kilogrammes, this one goes the extra mile extra pound. At 9.1 kilogrammes, the model's pretty heavy, no doubt about it. Of course, you seldom move stationary mixers, so we wouldn't call its considerable weight a considerable drawback. Plus, measuring 38.5 x 24 x 35.5 centimetres, this appliance is as compact as its more lightweight competition, so even one-handed relocation is possible. Challenging, maybe, but possible.

What's also possible is that the complementary attachment list is quite thorough. Most modern-day stationary mixers come with k-beaters, whisks, and dough hooks. Despite its almost vintage appearance, the model follows the same suit. Using these attachments, you can prepare flavoured bread, whip up brilliant-looking cakes, and treat guests to a delicious pavlova.

But, again, there's nothing unique about these attachments, so there's also nothing unique about the dishes and desserts you can prepare with it. There is, however, something unique about the model's fold function. With this function, the machine enables folding and layering ingredients together so prepare soufflés, mousses, or meringues with relative ease.

Review of Kenwood kMix 0W20011139 Stand Mixer

Smart Speed Control

The ergonomically designed controls that this machine incorporates do not just mesh well with its retro profile but also let you manage the model's speed settings with comfort and ease. Using the smart speed control dial, you can smoothly and carefully build up speed without spilling ingredients. Apart from that, the appliance will automatically stop when its head's lifted, making sure that the machine remains safe.

Like most stand mixers, the Kenwood kMix 0W20011139 arrives with a splash guard and a spatula. The splashguard employs an extra-large chute, which means you'll have no trouble adding sizable ingredients. The spatula, as always, will let you remove these ingredients, catching every last drop.

Bottom line, this machine from Kenwood matches retro aesthetics with modern-day performance, making one impressive stand mixer.

Kenwood Chef KVC3100W

A Long Attachment List

The Kenwood Chef KVC3100W is a pretty massive machine. At 38 x 28 x 30 centimetres, this is not the most compact appliance on this list, not quite. On the plus side, there's a pretty good chance that most people will find this model a little more practical and a lot less awkward than the more space-spacing stand mixers. Appearance-wise, the machine looks a bit bland, but that's not something that most companies prioritise with mixers anyway. Looking decent is acceptable in this business and we can give 'decent', no sweat.

Discussing more important matters, this appliance can come with 25 attachments, which is not a short list, not one bit. Aside from the usual suspects (k-beaters, balloon whisks, dough hooks, you know them) that will always arrive with the unit, you can pony up some extra dough and receive a food mincer attachment, a food processor attachment, a fruit press attachment, the company's very own ThermoResist™ blender attachment, and many more. Needless to say, between these attachments, there's almost nothing this machine won't let you prepare. They're pretty cheap as well, so we would not advise against some browsing, to say the least. Pasta rollers, ice cream makers, the company has them all, and they're all compatible with this appliance.

Review of Kenwood Chef KVC3100W Stand Mixe

Flawless Dough

Even without complementary attachments though, this is one capable unit. The bowl's 4.6-litre capacity will let you prepare 44 cupcakes. Made from stainless steel, the same bowl should last decades without wearing out or showing corrosion signs.

The above-mentioned attachments are compatible with this appliance thanks to the low- and high-speed outlets that you can switch between. With the same outlets, you can also replace the dough hook with a whisk, preparing bread and pizza with the latter and cream, sauces, and egg whites with the former. Not unlike most k-beaters, the one that comes with this stand mixer will make sure you're able to mix cakes and cookie dough.

Supporting these attachments will be the variable speed control dial and the pulse function, tailoring the speed and the motion to the recipe's requirements. In the meantime, the model's planetary mixing action will be ensuring a thorough mix, making flawless pizza dough.

Counting the non-skid feet on the bottom, the splash guard, and the included spatula, the Kenwood Chef KVC3100W is a complete package. Unpack it and you can start preparing mouthwatering savoury dishes and yummy desserts.

Tower T12033

Intense Mixing

The Tower T12033 looks about as intense as the company's appliances usually look. Sporting Tower's staple black housing, the model matches the brunet paintwork with bronze/rose gold accents, creating a pretty elegant combination that makes the machine look much more expensive than its low-end price tag would suggest. Besides looking good, this appliance is also no slouch in the performance department. Still, keeping the price around 75 quid and producing a machine without a few weak points is nigh impossible, so we're not saying that this machine is flawless, not really.

First, the power cord is fairly short, which means that you'll be more tied to the mains than you normally would be. Second, the package does not include a spatula. That being said, at this price point, there's no shame in that, and you can always purchase one for 5-10 quid separately.

Setting these almost negligible drawbacks aside, we have basically no complaints left. Following in its less affordable contemporaries' footsteps, the machine arrives with a sizable, 5-litre bowl. Crafted from stainless steel, the bowl's protected against rust and corrosion. Plus, it is pretty thick, meaning that the bowl can take a serious lickin' and keep on tickin'. Along with the bowl, what should not deform is the handle that's attached to it, making sure that you can grab, hold, and carry the bowl with one hand.

Atop this bowl, you can put a handy splash guard that's also supplied with the package. With this guard, even on the highest speed setting, the machine works without spilling. Furthermore, the guard is transparent, so you can keep an eye on what's happening in the bowl without removing the splash guard.

Review of Tower T12033 Stand Mixer

Ensuring the Right Consistency

Looking elsewhere, there's very little separating this machine from its stationary peers. You have the same 6 speed settings that you can switch between and the pulse function that makes sure the dough's given the right consistency. Power-wise, the appliance reaches 1000 watts, which is standard among budget and mid-priced stand mixers. The planetary mixing action, with its signature thorough approach, leaves no ingredient behind. Last but not quite least, the non-skid feet will prevent the machine from skidding and shaking around the countertops.

In closing, when you're working with less than 100 quid, you'll have a pretty hard time finding a machine that can compete with the Tower T12033, let alone beat it.

Morphy Richards 400023

Orbital Mixing Action

The Morphy Richards 400023 shares the company's affordable pricing policy. But, unlike most stand mixers at this price point, this is one capable machine. Amateur bakers or seasoned professionals, there's very little chance that you will not benefit from this appliance or, at the very least, find the model useful at times. To begin with, despite belonging to the budget class, the machine looks quite sleek.

The white housing works well with black inserts and the chrome-treated stainless steel bowl. Of course, made from stainless steel, the bowl is protected from corrosion damage and will not start forming rust patches with time. Having said that, with its 4-litre capacity, the bowl's not especially spacious. But, despite that being the case, where most people are concerned, 4 litres is plenty, so you might not even notice the difference between this option and its 4.5- or even 5-litre counterparts.

Mirroring its more budget-hostile peers, the model utilises an orbital mixing motion. What that means is that, as the attachment that you have chosen spins, the motor's head turns in the opposite direction, making sure that each ingredient is incorporated and mixed with sufficient thoroughness.

Drawing 800 watts, this is not the fastest or most powerful machine but, between the 6 speed settings that this appliance comes equipped with and the additional pulse function, you should have no trouble whipping up delicious mixes, pastries, snacks, and more. The model will also let you prepare homemade sauces, dips, and mashed potatoes with very little effort.

Review of Morphy Richards 400023 Stand Mixer

No Splashes

When you review stand mixers, the attachments that are shipped with the appliance are almost as important as the appliance itself. In this case, we're working with a pretty solid dust cover and an even more solid splash guard. As you would imagine, the dust cover keeps the bowl dust-free during storage (and occasional transportation), whilst the splash guard prevents the ingredients from escaping the bowl, keeping the kitchen mess-free. Plus, the splash guard has a fairly wide pour spout so that you can add ingredients without turning it.

Apart from that, the machine comes outfitted with non-skid feet, protecting the countertops from scratches and preventing this appliance from moving around during use. Add the full safety interlock system to the mix (pardon the pun) and you can make the case that the Morphy Richards 400023 is just as good as the stand mixers that cost twice as much as this model.

Heska 1500W 4-in-1

Doing More with Less

The Heska 1500W 4-in-1 Food Stand Mixer does more with less. Despite the model's value-oriented price tag, the appliance draws and outputs 1500 watts, a lot more than most stand mixers these days. Because that's the case, the machine takes less time to prepare the same desserts and dishes that you would be preparing typically.

What's more, besides the traditional balloon whisk, dough hook, and k-beater, the model also arrives with a flexible silicone beater, hence its '4-in-1' disposition. With this beater, you can stir, mix, and beat cookies and batters, preparing perfect pastries. As per usual, the balloon whisk will make sure you'll be able to whip eggs, egg whites, and heavy creams. The dough hook, on the other hand, will give you the means to knead yeast dough, preparing different bread types, rolls, and pretty good pizza.

Considering the model's increased power, the same <5-litre bowl that 9/10 stand mixers come with would make very little sense, therefore the manufacturers have supplied this machine with a 5.5-litre bowl. Owing to this large-capacity bowl, you can mix enough batter for ~60 cookies or stir ~6 cups filled with dry ingredients. Made from stainless steel and polished with a chrome finish, the bowl looks good and will continue looking good, thanks to its scratch-resistant treatment and stainless steel composition. To add more, the bowl adopts a sizable handle. Holding the handle, you can relocate the bowl with one hand without worrying about spilling one drop. Plus, it is dishwasher safe, so you can clean it up without wasting a substantial amount of time or energy on it.

Review of Heska 1500W 4-in-1 Food Stand Mixer

Ready, Steady, Go

Of course, since the model costs less than 100 quid and packs an even more serious punch than its mid-range competition, a few drawbacks will be inevitable. From where we're standing, the biggest one lies with the splash guard. Because it is not very steady, the guard might let an occasional splash fly. On the bright side, the opposite can be said about the machine's tilt-head design. With it, you can access the mixture without bending. Likewise, the anti-slip silicone suction cups on the bottom will make sure that, unlike the splash guard, the appliance remains steady, preventing it from damaging the countertops.

Not even mentioning its low-key brilliant red paintwork, the Heska 1500W 4-in-1 Food Stand Mixer is a small investment that will pay big dividends from the get-go and down the road.

What Is a Stand Mixer?

The importance of kitchen appliances is hard to underestimate, especially if you're someone who does a lot of cooking. Not only do they lift the burden of having to do everything by hand, but they also significantly speed up all processes and allow us to spend less time in the kitchen. And a stand mixer is just such an appliance. Designed specifically for mixing and whipping jobs, it proves indispensable when it comes to making dough, purees, milkshakes, smoothies, and many other recipes. The strength of stand mixers is that they are made with a more powerful motor compared to traditional hand models and can produce a more homogeneous mixture, seamlessly beating through soft and tough ingredients alike. In addition to that, they are more convenient to use. All you need is to select the optimal speed and press the power button. No need to hold it or twist your wrist - the device does all the labourious work for you.

If you adore drinking vitamin cocktails in the mornings, then we strongly advise taking a close look at countertop blenders. They can process solid and soft ingredients in mere seconds so you can enjoy your favourite drink as often as you want.

What Features to Compare

Performance

The first thing you should consider when choosing an appropriate mixer is its performance that might depend on the following factors:

  • A fine motor power allows processing stiff dough or tricky batter properly and quickly. So, if you are likely to make such mixtures, then a high-performance stand mixer is the one for you. The max power of the stand mixer can be up to 1000 watts. Not only high-end machines can process whatever you make them to, but also more humble ones can surprise you with their persistence.
  • The speed settings also determine the time it takes to process the whole mixture. The average stand mixer has 3-5 speed levels and they are used differently depending on the consistency of the ingredients. There are also stand mixers that have 12 speed levels, but such a distinct speed variety is mostly related to the high-end models.
  • And the last but not least thing to consider is the method of mixing. It influences both the speed and the quality, and how even the ingredients are mixed up together. A planetary rotation is considered to be the most effective way of mixing however it usually concerns more professional mixer machines on the market. The nozzles rotate in a certain manner mixing ingredients thoroughly while the bowl is fixed. The rest of the stand mixers typically use a standard way of processing, when the head rotates in one direction only. It often causes discomfort since the ingredients are badly whipped off the walls or small lumps are created. To avoid this effect, some manufacturers make rotated bowls for even mixing.

Bowl

The size and the design of the bowl also matter since you will want to know how much batches you can prepare in one row. The bowl can be either plastic or metal, the latter is considered to be the most durable and reliable. The capacity of the bowl should be at least 2-5 litres. However, a number of portions you can process will be a bit less than that. There are also electric mixers that have a rotating bowl or a planetary action, which allows to process the ingredients properly and leave nothing behind.

Attachments

With a help of different attachments that come in the package, you can prepare a variety of recipes. Generally, the set contains beaters (for whipping) and dough hooks (for kneading). The design of all attachments is mostly the same as well as the mode of operation. They only differ in the material they're made of and quality. As an addition, stand mixers often have a masher/puree attachment included.

Convenience

And the last but not least thing to consider is the convenience of the mixer. There are some vital features and functions that stand mixers should possess. For instance, it is great to have such an extra feature as a slow-start for preventing the ingredients from splattering all over the counter. Quick burst button may also come in handy when you want to dissolve small lumps in the dough or make even mixtures quickly. You can detach the bowl and the attachments in common mixers, however, some units can be transformed into hand mixers. You simply need to take off the mixer from the stand and use it for your needs. The steel casing and steel bowl are the most reliable and impact-resistant, therefore you don't have to worry that something may happen to it.
