BOSCAM K7

Distinguish Small Objects

Even though the previous model was no slouch, the BOSCAM K7 is a huge upgrade. While the camera was already impressive (and still is), the comprehensive no-interference reversing that this kit is offering is what sells this product before its competition. Well, that and the advanced encryption that the camera's boasting. As you can imagine, despite the helpful accessories, everything starts with the camera.

To be more precise, with the 5-inch TFT-LCD screen that makes the colours accurate, the contrast rate high, and the visuals detailed so that you can distinguish between small comparable objects. The settings menu is straightforward, so navigating its Mirror, Normal, Guideline, Reset, and more features should not present noticeable challenges. The images that will be appearing on the screen will be appearing with improved clarity, enabling safe reversing. But, again, the encrypted wireless signal contributes as well, ensuring zero-interference signal transmit, meaning that you can reverse without worrying about, say, the radio interfering with the signal.

Talking about the biggest contributors, the light sensors that this wireless backup camera kit is working with earns on its keep tenfold. Owing to these powerful sensors, the camera enables low-light parking, increasing reversing safety at night. Between them and the integrated transmitter, this model makes night parking much more reliable, making sure that the view behind the vehicle at night is not just detailed but also coloured.

Rugged Housing

Should the viewing angle on reversing cameras be as wide as possible? To some extent, yes, positive. But also - not quite. You see, the issue is that an ultra-wide-angle lens can distort the image, so going above ~140 degrees is not always the best move here. With that in mind, the K7 adopts 110-degree horizontal and 140-degree diagonal viewing angles, making the view behind you sufficient without distortion.

Construction-wise, the housing's much more robust and durable than you would expect. The camera is fine with temperatures as low as -20 degrees and as high as 60 degrees Celcius. With its IP68 rating, it is both dustproof and waterproof.

Going back to the promise we made earlier, the accessories have been upgraded as well, especially the reusable suction cup that lets you mount the screen on windshield and dashboards without worrying that the device might fall.

Without discussing unnecessary details, the BOSCAM K7 is the camera that will enable even the least experienced drivers to park safely.

Aeo MH003

IP68 Enclosure

The Aeo MH003 is a discreet wireless reversing camera, which is usually the starting point with these cameras and what we want from them first and, sometimes, even foremost. What we also want from them is to be sturdy and durable. Since these cameras sit outside, you want them to be waterproof, hence the model's IP68 enclosure that protects the camera not just from splashes or downpours but even from 1-metre immersion. Likewise, the camera is dust-tight, meaning complete protection against contact. Essentially, what we're saying is that this device boasts complete protection from the elements, so you can drive without worrying about the weather conditions.

More often than not, when we say wireless backup cameras, we mean reversing camera kits that include separate monitors and cameras. But, this time around, we're working without a screen. Instead, the camera comes outfitted with a WiFi module. Using this module, the cam can be paired with Android and iOS smartphones, transmitting the image onto the phone's screen. As far as we're concerned, this is a little more convenient since most people have a smartphone with a sizable screen anyway, so you're decluttering the space inside the vehicle and pay less than you would otherwise.

Review of Aeo MH003 Wireless Reversing Camera with Android & IOS Device Control

Perfect Night Vision

When you're reviewing wireless backup cameras, issues can arise with night vision or viewing angle. In this case, the former part is nothing to complain about. On the contrary, featuring 12 IR lights, the camera delivers excellent night vision, offering up to 9 metres of spotless vision on the darkest nights. Unfortunately, the same sentiment cannot be extended towards the viewing angle. Stopping at 120 degrees, the camera covers less than its peers within the same weight class, which is a little disappointing. That being said, 120 degrees usually suffices and anything above ~140-150 is usually unnecessary since the blind spot does not reach more than ~100 degrees.

What is always necessary is the integrated rechargeable battery that the camera comes with. Using the included USB cable, you can recharge this battery from any USB-enabled device, an approach that we prefer over models that work with AA(A) batteries. Also necessary is the magnetic base on this camera so that you can mount it onto most metal surfaces with relative ease.

In short, ditching the separate screen, the Aeo MH003 makes the setup a little more practical than what standard reversing camera kits are usually offering.

BOSCAM K3

Detailed and Coloured Nighttime View

The BOSCAM K3 is less than the BOSCAM K7, nothing especially surprising here, right? This is not a bad camera, not one bit, but considering that the price is reduced almost threefold, we're not expecting the same features and specs here and neither should you. What you should expect is a reliable reverse parking assistant, which this camera is.

The 4.3-inch LCD screen that this device's using is not quite the screen that the K7 model is using but the image clarity this one offers is somewhat comparable and, generally speaking, sufficient. After all, you're not watching movies on this thing, are we wrong? The colours are accurate, the contrast is fine, and the view is detailed enough. The settings menu here is also pretty much the same, with an accessible menu structure and intuitive icons. Plus, with the company's wired system, you can park without worrying about interference or flickering.

Reversing is difficult as it is. Reversing at night is even more difficult. Making the view behind you detailed as well as coloured, this camera makes the task much less difficult. The night vision on this one is not necessarily superb (the same can be said about the K7 though) but, again, sufficient, repeating the theme that we've established before. Because, when you're paying ~40 quid, "sufficient" is not a terrible deal, not one bit. To add more, the camera employs a 6-layer all-glass lens, increasing its resolution and decreasing distortion so that the reverse parking image is always displayed with respectable accuracy.

Review of BOSCAM K3 Reversing Camera Kit

Fitting All Vehicles

Some people argue that backup cameras are only as good as their viewing angle and, at the very least, they have a point. In this case, the camera stretches the angle 170 degrees, which might prove excessive at times, somewhat distorting the image but, normally, the view will be just fine. Plus, you can adjust the lens 45 degrees, making the camera compatible not just with sedans but also with hatchbacks, crossovers, minivans, estate cars, mini lorries, MPVs, cargo vans, SUVs, and more.

But, going back to the parking part, the model can also display an optional overlaid, serving as parking guides that simplify vehicle alignment during reverse parking. With these guides, accessing the distance between objects becomes a less guesswork-oriented task.

Bottom line, the BOSCAM K3 will suit people with varying vehicles and expertise level. But one thing is certain - this reversing camera will facilitate safe reverse parking without breaking the bank.

AUTO-VOX M1W

Thorough Kit

The AUTO-VOX M1W is a thorough kit, which is probably why this product is as popular among different drivers as it is. We're not saying that this is necessarily the best wireless backup camera kit but, at this price point, it just might be. With its help, you'll be able to spot unexpected obstacles and park in tight spaces with relative ease. Of course, to some extent, you can say that about all backup cameras.

What you cannot say about all cameras though is that you can install them without dealing with complex wiring that involves running the video cable across the vehicle. The people behind this kit are guaranteeing hassle-free long-range reception distance in open areas, which is something we can guarantee as well. What they're also claiming is that the maximum signal transmission distance on this camera reaches 100 metres, which is not really something we can confirm. Still, at the very least, the camera always covers ~20 metres, and who needs more than that?

Though the camera's alright, and we will circle back to it, the screen's not too shabby as well. Plus, the silicone suction mount that comes with the screen will let you install this one on windshields or dashboards. While this is nothing new, what is somewhat new is that you can rotate the mount 360 degrees. What's also not quite as common is that the suction pad is washable, so you can reuse the pad without worrying about removing its stickiness/adhesiveness/viscosity, whatever floats your boat. The one problem we have with the screen is that there's no anti-glare coating, so when sunlight hits the display, the content starts looking washed out or not readable at all.

Review of AUTO-VOX M1W Wireless Reversing Camera Kit

IP68 Housing

As for the camera, its most attractive quality is the high-definition image processing unit that improves image clarity, making even small objects distinguishable. That being said, the 6 high-brightness LEDs with infrared modules are alright too, automatically turning on when the conditions get dark.

Stretching the viewing angle 170 degrees, the camera is excellent at reducing blind spots, even though 170 is usually unnecessary and might even distort the image at times.

Aside from sedans, the camera works with SUVs and trucks, the only difference being is that you usually have to put the screen and the cam closer to each other. Finally, the camera is armed with IP68, so you can drive even when it is raining cats and dogs outside knowing that its circuitry is safe.

DOUXURY D-Cam4.3Ana

Protected Against the Elements

The DOUXURY D-Cam4.3Ana does not necessarily disappoint, there's just nothing outstanding about this model, hence the last spot on this list. Everything about the kit is above average, including the screen, the camera, specs, construction, you name it. Compared against everyday wireless backup cameras, this kit is brilliant, we just like the ones that come before here a little more.

That being said, we can appreciate the IP68 housing that the camera is endowed with so that you can drive knowing that even the biggest downpours will not be able to do anything. Dirt, dust, sand, the camera's protected against them all. The image sensors on reversing cameras are seldom anything worth praising. Nevertheless, the one that this model's adopting is pretty good, with the HD CMOS setup making the visuals crisp and the colours accurate. While its 720 x 576p resolution does not quite earn the HD title, this is more than wireless backup cameras are usually offering and, truth be told, more than reverse parking requires.

As far as the viewing angle is concerned, this model fits the same mould that the previous cameras are fitting as well. Expanding the viewing angle 170 degrees, the camera reduces blind spots and lets you park knowing that you're not missing something between or around you and the parking space. At times, the 170-degree angle will prove excessive, distorting the image a little bit but this is not really something that can make parking more difficult, just less accurate at worst.

Review of DOUXURY D-Cam4.3Ana Wireless Reversing Camera

Bright Infrared Lights

The screen is not the kit's weakest point but also not its strongest ally. The size is more than fine, measuring 4.3 inches. There's some anti-glare treatment, making the display always readable, which's good. But the settings menu is convoluted. Sure, with time, you'll be able to navigate the few features that this device's offering without problems but, initially, it might prove challenging.

The six infrared lights that the camera incorporates will not prove challenging at all though. No, they're bright and, covering somewhere around 8 metres (~25 feet), these lights will make parking at night almost as comfortable as parking during the daytime. Last but not necessarily least, installation-wise, the screen lets you choose between the standard suction cups and a stand that is more ergonomic than the cups.

Long story short, the DOUXURY D-Cam4.3Ana will make sure you remain comfortable and in control before, during, and after parking your car.

What Is a Wireless Backup Camera?

Designed to aid drivers in manoeuvring the rear parts of their vehicles while they are backing up or simply to see what’s going on on the road behind the car while they’re driving, wireless backup cameras are the best tools in case the vehicle has blind spots.

So what makes this type of car cameras so special after all? The main reason why so many drivers choose wireless models is that they do not require a cable connection between the display and the camera itself, which makes them a great choice for cars (large, medium, and small) and for trucks. On the contrary, this type of camera relies on Bluetooth connection and needs little power in order to run (meant for 12V or 24V car systems).

While there are definitely a lot of models to choose from, one may pick between models with screens or without them. Some backup cameras feature a direct connection to your mobile gadgets, which saves a lot of space on your dashboard.

If you are in dire need of more sophisticated automobile gear, you may also be interested in brake control systems. Additionally, if parking is a real challenge for you, take a look at our review of the top parking systems out there.

What Features to Compare

Depending on your particular needs and the dimensions of your vehicle you should look for a particular model that will fulfill them and fit your car. Thus, let's make a quick breakdown of the key aspects that make backup cameras different.

Screen Size

The size of the screen that transmits the image from the camera can be quite important. In case you are driving a big RV or a truck you will need at least a 5- or 6-inch screen, however, if you own a regular sedan, a 3.5- or 4-inch display will be more than enough to cover the rear of the vehicle. The optional guidelines on the screen will help you in judging distances between your vehicle and the car behind you.

Viewing Angle and Camera Resolution

Every camera has a viewing angle and the reason why it is important for backup models lies within the ability to see the whole width of the road behind you. A device with a big viewing angle will provide a more detailed picture of what’s actually going on in the rear of your vehicle and, therefore, it will be easier to check for traffic on the road behind you. Likewise, a more sophisticated camera will provide the user with a crisper image, which will enable smaller objects and vehicles in the distance better. That said, if you are looking for a simple hitch camera, you won’t need a high-resolution camera since the only thing you will monitor is your cargo.

Maximum Operating Distance

The bigger the maximum operating range of the camera transmitter, the greater the distance you can use the wireless kit on. A large operating distance of the wireless backup cameras will come in handy for drivers of big vehicles, such as camper RVs, pickup trucks, and medium-sized trailers. Likewise, if you own a small jeep (Jeep Wrangler, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV-4 or similar) a regular 30- 40-foot version of the wireless system will be more than enough to cover your needs.

Power Source

Depending on the configuration of your vehicle you may choose between battery-powered or wired camera types. While the first is pretty much self-explanatory, the latter can be connected to the electric grid of your vehicle. Usually, the wireless backup cameras are connected to the reverse light of your vehicle so the device will automatically turn on each time you switch the gear to reverse.

Connectivity & Additional Features

This category can include an additional lighting system for better and quicker access to so-called night vision that is meant to help drivers to reverse during the night time. The night vision may include regular and infrared LED lights that are directed at the road behind your vehicle. Thus, the reflected light lights up the area quite easily without blinding other drivers.

Mounting Method

Both the camera and the screen (in case the model you are looking for has it) can be installed or mounted. The camera can be installed by either using special brackets that fix it in place in the rear of your car or by using the screws on your registration (number) plate. Likewise, the monitor can be mounted on your dashboard or windshield by using the brackets or suction cups (both methods provide a secure grip with the surface).

How to Back up Your Vehicle Safely

Even the most sophisticated drivers out there know that reverse parking can be tough from time to time. Harsh weather conditions, bad roads, and traffic on the roads can all be a real challenge. But what is the ideal solution to all of these problems that you may face on the road? We have gathered some useful tips to help you park your vehicle using the reverse gear.

Take It Slow

  • Since the reverse gear is more powerful than first drive gear it is important to not push the gas pedal too much or to not hit it at all sometimes. The key to reverse (also known as parallel) parking is to not get overwhelmed. Likewise, your foot should be close to the brake pedal in order to prevent a dangerous situation or even a car accident.

Practice Takes Time

  • If you are an inexperienced driver it would be great to practice with training cones or other soft objects before you can perform full-fledged parallel parking in a real-life situation. Remember, the repairs of your car’s body will cost you more than the time you will spend to advance your parking skills.

Leave Room for Other Cars

  • When performing the parking make sure that your car has enough room for maneuvers. Leave enough space for the car in front of you to drive from the spot.

Assistance Is Never Too Much

  • In case you are driving with a passenger or two, they can help direct you into the right spot. Remember, two pairs of eyes are better than one, especially if they can tell how much room there is between your and other cars.

Safety First

  • Always check the road for oncoming traffic.

Help Others

  • If you see another driver who is trying to park their car or in case he or she is signalling for a reverse park leave him or her some room to manoeuvre their vehicle or just pass right by.

Leave Room for Your Car as Well

  • When searching for a parking spot, keep an eye on spots that are at least 5 feet longer than your vehicle.

Notify Other Drivers

  • Before parking, it is important to flash the brake lights and to put on the turn signal in the direction of the parking spot.

Ways to Exit Parallel Parking Spots

  • Back up your car in a straight line as far as you can manoeuvre it, without a collision with the car in the rear.
  • Turn the wheels all the way to the right or left (depending on which side of the road you’ve parked the car). After that, you will have to make sure that you turned the drive gear on.
  • Turn on the turn signal to notify other drivers that you are about to leave the parking spot.
  • Check the road for the oncoming traffic (once again).
  • In case you have a reverse backup camera it would be easier to check the blind spot for the traffic behind your vehicle.
  • Your fenders need to have enough room to pass the car that is located in front of you.
  • Turn the wheels slowly to the right or left (depends on the side of the road you’ve parked your car).

And after that, you’re ready to go! Hopefully, after reading the tips, you have learned something new about the art of parallel parking. Remember that on the roads the safety always comes first and that there’s always room for improvement.
