Liforme ORIGINAL Unique Alignment Marker System

Superior Grip

If you're looking for a "wow" effect, the Liforme Yoga Mat can deliver it to you. It's the best-in-class mat that is neither too stretchy nor too thick. Just perfect. So, if you don't mind paying premium, this mat will surely help you take your fitness game to a whole new level.

To begin with, we would like to stress that this mat is claimed to be the grippiest product available for sale today. It's made with a revolutionary "GripForMe" material that stays adequately grippy even when you're sweaty wet, making it ideal for practising hot yoga. The superior grip also gives you much more confidence and allows you to play with your skills without worrying about slipping. That is to say, you can safely try such tricky poses as a warrior, mountain, down dog, and the like. Yet, the downside and the trade-off for that extra grip is the fact that the mat picks up dirt from floors quite easily. Therefore, you may need to wipe it clean after each use.

However, the best thing about this mat, which makes it a standout, is the patented AlignForMe System. As the name implies, there are intelligent alignment marks on the surface that work as a navigational tool for yoga practice. That means, no longer will you need to waste your time wondering what should go where. The useful lines will give you all the guidance you may need for perfect body alignment.

In all, if you're serious about yoga and want the grippiest and the smartest mat for your classes, you can't go wrong with the Liforme rug. It's quite expensive but there’s nothing comparable to it in terms of quality and support.

Xn8 Sports Padded NBR 15mm

Super Cushioned

If you're after a versatile mat that could be easily used in a gym and beyond it, the XN8 Padded Exercise Yoga Mat is the thing that may catch your fancy. What differs it from usual yoga mats is the extra thickness. Made with 15mm cushioning, it's a very squishy and comfortable mat suitable for a wide variety of activities from yoga and gymnastics to pilates, stretching, and other floor exercises. It's super soft (almost like memory foam) and delivers great protection for knees and back while staying put on most surfaces including tile, wooden or cement floors.

However, the benefits of the XN8 Padded Exercise Yoga Mat do not end here. What also contributes to its usability is that in addition to being thick, it is also waterproof, which allows using it as a camping mat. Furthermore, it's carefully crafted from high-quality NBR foam material, which ensures superior durability both indoors and outdoors and also allows for its no-hassle upkeep. Take note that the mat might smell a little straight after unpacking but luckily, that stink quickly fades in the air. Plus, you can expedite this process by hanging it out for a few hours or giving it a wipe.

When it comes to dimensions, the mat has a length of 183 centimetres and a width of 61 centimetres, meaning it can comfortably accommodate pretty much any individual. At the same time, it weighs only 1.18 kg and is quite easy to transport thanks to the carry strap. For those in need of a sports companion to take outdoors, it's an ideal option.

Proworks Z028

Basic Option

If you're in the market for a basic, affordable mat to practise yoga, gymnastics, stretching, pilates, and ABS exercising, the Proworks Yoga Mat may be a sound choice. Made from high-quality NBR foam, it's designed to deliver users optimal comfort and support for light gymnastics. The material is also latex-free and phthalate-free, meaning it's skin-friendly and emits no chemical smell.

Yet, the best part is that it's very bouncy and soft. If you practise yoga poses which can be hard on your knees, then this mat will be quite cushy. It's 10-mm thick and, thus, it can double as an outdoor mat too. It provides good cushioning during ground exercises while staying soft on your skin.

For outdoor training, the mat is easy to set up and roll. It has a convenient strap holder that keeps it tightly wrapped up and allows you to сarry it over your shoulder. Once unrolled, the mat stays flat on the ground with no curling of the edges.

Although this product is claimed to be sweatproof, it has tiny pore-like pouches that can trap some sweat. That being said, it shouldn't be a dealbreaker since the mat is easy to wipe clean after each use.

Long story short, the Proworks yoga mat is a good option for indoor and outdoor yoga or pilates. It has a thick, dense structure which provides optimal body support and cushions you from the ground.

Maximo Fitness Multi Purpose

Extra Thick

In case you're looking not for a yoga-oriented mat but a basic option for general fitness use, you may like the Maximo Exercise Mat. Made from premium-grade NBR foam, it's extremely thick and comfy for such workouts as pilates, stretching, sit-ups, abs, core, press-ups, planks, and more. Moreover, it's durable enough to survive through numerous picnics, camping trips, and sleepovers when you need extra elevation and cushioning from the ground. For easy transportation, it comes with a carrying strap and can be neatly rolled up when not in use.

All that being said, the Maximo mat may not be the best option for professional yoga and HIIT classes since there is some ‘stretch’ and movement in it - the mat can expand a little under pressure. So, if you're a serious yoga enthusiast, you may need to consider a more yoga-oriented mat for your needs.

On the upside, a thick mat like this is surely one of the best in terms of absorbing impact sound. Therefore, if you live in a flat and often practise ‘lockdown’ home fitness, this mat is the way to go. It pads nicely against the floor, has a very good density, and absorbs sounds very well. On top of that, it's made by a reputable British company that covers it with a 100% lifetime guarantee. So, you have nothing to lose by trying the Maximo Exercise Mat

TOPLUS Non Slip

Well-Balanced Model

The TOPLUS yoga mat is another great alternative to thin, gym mats that have seen better days. It's a well-balanced model that is easy to carry and a pleasure to use. It comes fitted with an additional carry handle, so it can be rolled up and transported to any class you're going to attend.

The mat is made with quality TPE material. It's the latest technological improvement that has no latex and PVC in its composition. It's also manufactured through a specific process that ensures no chemicals or toxic emissions are released into the air. Best of all, the mat has a double-layer structure to provide optimal grip and excellent cushioning on any surface. That is to say, it won't slip on wood floors, tile floors, and cement floors, meaning you can be confident that it won’t move during your classes. With that, it’s very comfortable to lay on. Being 6-mm thick, it gives users a good barrier to any hard floor.

Another perk is that this mat has two-tone design and is available in 10 colours, all of which are stylish and eye-catching. Plus, all the mats are waterproof, so if any mark occurs, you can easily wipe it off and maintain the top-notch look. As a nice touch, it comes with a free sweat cloth.

All in all, this is a decent all-round yoga mat. It provides good resistance and cushioning, plus it's super-stylish to complete your outfit and make you stand out from the crowd.

What Is a Yoga Mat?

For those practising yoga, getting a yoga mat might be a good solution. Why? Let's check out what advantages it offers. First things first, exercising on a yoga mat feels more comfortable, allowing you to hold your posture for a longer time. Another advantage is that these yoga mats provide protection for your joints while also giving you a non-slip surface for training. Also, yoga mats can help improve your balance and posture during workouts. And lastly, for those practising yoga in groups, these mats can outline the private space along with its borders so that you all can train with greater comfort. So, as you can see, there are quite a number of advantages to having such a seemingly simple thing as a yoga mat. For this review, we've selected five yoga mat models from different brands so you can choose the one that best fits your needs (and taste, of course).

Besides yoga, this type of mat can be used for other exercises including those that involve resistance bands, fitness balls, kettlebells, and dumbbells, for example. Look through these selections too and add a few more tools to your home fitness equipment.

What Features to Compare

Size and Thickness

Choosing the best yoga mat, you should, first of all, pay attention to its size and thickness. These two features are crucial. The mat size should be 10 cm longer than your height. Some yoga practices require even a longer mat. For example, if you practice asana yoga, you'd better buy a mat at least 220 cm long. At the same time, the thickness of the mat has a direct impact on how soft it is. It will be easier to lean an elbow or knee on a thicker yoga mat without discomfort. Also, a thick mat will not conduct the cold from the floor, which is important if you practise savasana and long-lasting meditation. The optimal thickness of a yoga mat is 3-20mm.

Efficiency

To buy a yoga mat that will be convenient to use, pay attention to the structure and material it's been made of. Most yoga mats from popular brands are made of either natural materials, thermoplastic elastomer or synthetic. Let's take a closer look at each option:

  • Synthetic mats are made of PVC (elastic, durable synthetic polymer). Such mats are not very good for yoga because they are too slippery. Their lifespan is two years at best. However, you may try yoga mats made of dense PVC: they are rough, non-slip, and quite durable. A PVC mat will be suitable for a novice who is still not sure about his/her near-term yoga perspectives.
  • Thermoplastic elastomer mats are suitable for fitness and yoga practice. They are softer, lighter, and more flexible than PVC mats. Also, such yoga mats are pleasant to touch and they keep their shape very well. Such mats do not fade in the sun and they are resistant to cold temperatures. Also, due to their non-slip surface, softness, and capability of absorbing sweat, they are particularly great for yoga. As usual, such yoga mats can serve you as long as 4-5 years.
  • Natural yoga mats are made of natural rubber with inclusions of jute. The rubber is not so lightweight, but absolutely frizz-free. Moreover, rubber yoga mats don't slip or emit any unpleasant smell. They are thicker than synthetic mats, so you won't hurt your elbows or knees if you need to lean on the mat. Rubber does not conduct the cold from the floor, it is very sticky so you can easily do the "downward-facing dog pose" and other asanas that require leaning on your arms.

Maintenance and Usability

PVC yoga mats are durable enough to be washed in a washing machine. Other mats are better to clean with a wet wipe or tea tree oil. Please note: do not wash them with soap and water. Any detergent is absorbed into a yoga mat and it is really hard to rinse it later. During intensive training, the soap soaks into the carpet and mixes with body moisture, and then rolls on the mat like an ice cube. At the same time, if you are going to practice yoga not at home but somewhere else, take a look at such parameters as weight and mobility. You should be able to fold the yoga mat quickly and comfortably.
